Earlier today, Papa John’s (PZZA; Buy, $102.64) reported Q4 adjusted EPS of $0.40, matching our $0.40 forecast, but coming below sell-side consensus (according to Consensus Metrix) of $0.45. Keep in mind, special year-end bonuses hampered Q4 EPS by approximately -6 cents, and this may not have been taken into account by some sell-side firms’ estimates.

The BlackBox Index for April 2019 Disappoints, But…

Earlier today (Thursday, May 9th), we learned that the BlackBox Index of same-store sales for April 2019 declined by -0.4%, with same-store traffic down by -3.5%. The -0.4% showing for April 2019 marks the second-worst showing of the last 12 months, and marks meaningful sequential deceleration from the +1.2% figure attained in March 2019.

Earlier today (Thursday, April 11th), we learned that the BlackBox Index of samestore sales for March 2019 rose by +1.2%, with same-store traffic down by -1.8%. The +1.2% showing for March 2019 marks meaningful sequential acceleration from the -0.7% showing from February 2019, which was hampered by adverse weather. That said it did not quite reach the +2.0% numbers from December 2018 and January 2019, which were the best two months numbers of the last three years.
