Restaurants: The BlackBox Index for January 2021 Shows Stimulus Benefits

Earlier today (Thursday, February 11th) we learned that the BlackBox Index of same-store sales for January 2021 was down by -4.9%, with same-store traffic off by -12.2%. The -4.9% figure is +840 basis points better than the -13.3% number for December 2020, and +550 basis points better than the -10.3% figure for Q4 2020 as a whole.

MCD: McDonald’s Franchisee Survey Examines Franchisee & Corporate Relations

Today we publish part 2 of 2 of the January 2021 edition of our proprietary McDonald’s Franchisee Survey. Much of this report focuses on relations between U.S. franchisees and corporate. As we noted in the part 1 report published late last week, we asked our franchisee respondents to quantify the current relationship between franchisees and McDonald’s Corporation, using a scale of one to five, with 1=Poor and 5=Excellent. The average response we received was 1.41 — the lowest average response we have received for this question since Q4 2018’s 1.39.

The BlackBox Index for January 2019 is…

Earlier today (Thursday, February 7th), we learned that the BlackBox Index of samestore sales for January 2019 was +2.0%, with same-store traffic down by -0.7%. The +2.0% showing for January 2019 matches the +2.0% number from December 2018, which had been the best monthly number since August 2015. The January 2019 showing is particularly welcome given that mid-to-late January was likely negatively impacted by the recent so-called “Polar Vortex.”
